An Interesting Take on the Superfoods of 2016

Certainly as superfoods continue to grow in popularity each year, and they will, there are going to be new ones that pop up.

I do not know much about fashion, but it will probably go along the lines of different fashions for different seasons and each year it is different until it is far enough down the road that people have forgotten enough about something that it comes back around.

Well that is why I liked this article Superfoods of 2016. They were not afraid to start off by saying that coconut oil and chia seeds are a thing of the past and there are a few newbies on the list this year. Certainly this should not take away from something like coconut oil, which should be here to stay, but instead try to spark you to try a few new things. Even if you added 1-2 new foods you eat per year this is something that will certainly add up over time and ensure that you do not get bored of the same things over and over. It will also help to give you a broad nutrient profile of your food having it from many different sources.

One part that is amazing about this is that they started by talking about kohlrabi. Nobody does this and yet it really is an amazing vegetable. I personally like to peel it and eat it like an apple and it really does taste a bit like one too.

The author mentions other things such as:

  • Black Rice
  • Teff
  • Avocado Oil
  • Sweet Potato Flour
  • Maca Root
  • Bentonite Clay
  • Nigella sativa (a.k.a. Black cumin)
  • Lupin

On this list I have a hard time agreeing with teff and lupin because they are a grain and legume respectively. They may be highly nutritious, but they have too many anti-nutrients to come in as a superfood on my list. Another one that I can certainly get on board with as I use it myself, however didn’t think was new is the maca root. This is also known as peruvian ginseng and has been associated with many benefits including:

  • Boost Energy and Stamina
  • Increased Libido
  • Relief of symptoms associated with menopause
  • Help relieve mild depression

Sure, these are just a few of the current so called superfoods, but remember that anything you eat can be a super food if you bring it into your body with love and happiness knowing that it is going to be a very healthy food for you. Now it is your turn to go out and try these and others to find the healthiest foods for your body. Doing so you will be able to use these superfoods to turn yourself into a super man/woman/kid/spouse/friend or whatever you desire. Enjoy the new flavors.

Have a Great Day!
