Top Ways to Boost Your Vitamin D

Over the last few weeks we have really been looking at sunshine and boosting certain things that are great for the brain.

Well, it’s time for another one and a very important one on boosting your vitamin D.  Exposure to sunshine is far and above my favorite way to boost vitamin D.  For insight on how this is done, check out this post here. When that is not always an option it is good to have some backups to make sure your brain is in tip top shape.

Alternatives to Sunshine in Boosting Your Vitamin D:

  • Real Food:
    • Fatty Fish: All of the following are at the top of the list and are improved with bones and skin for higher content
      • Sardines
      • Mackerel
      • Salmon
      • Tuna
    • Beef Liver: Old school liver and onions is my favorite, but pate is good too
    • Egg Yolks: Lightly cooked or raw is your best bet for the brain
    • Raw Cheese and Raw Milk: This combines both vitamin D and K2, which you will see below is great for health of the body and brain
    • Fortified is Still a Supplement: and probably not a very good one. If a food has to be fortified it means that it has been processed and doesn’t have the nutrition on board that you need. This is just another form of advertising trying to get you to eat unhealthy food. Your brain still will know the difference.
  • Supplementation:
    • Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol): Meant to be the same as if exposing your body to sunlight and is much more powerful than vitamin D2. Don’t mess around and go for the good stuff, your brain is worth it!
    • Pair with Vitamin K2: When these two are used in concert it allows for calcium to be moved properly into bones and teeth and kept out of arteries and soft tissue.
  • Decrease Inflammation: Yup, another damming effect of inflammation. With inflammation high in the body it will not be able to produce as much vitamin D. It is no surprise that inflammation overall is just not good when it comes to brain health.
  • Lean Out: Since adipose tissue (fat) stores vitamin D it cannot be released into the bloodstream and utilized by the body. By helping your body lean out you can now more efficiently get that vitamin D out into the blood and up to the brain.

Just like BDNF levels, vitamin D levels will not shoot up overnight. However, by employing these methods to boost your vitamin D and make sure to get your sunshine you will be on your way to the brain boosting and protective benefits of both compounds.
