Superfoods for Kids

With my son starting to eat whole foods over the last few months the topic of giving him the healthiest foods possible is certainly on the front of my mind.

Then I stumbled across this article from Health Aim entitled “Kids Superfoods: Your Children Can Be Healthier Too.” They certainly got me hook, line and sinker and for those of you who want your kids to be healthy as well I suggest you listen up.

Here is the list they give of the 10 most agreeable superfoods for kids.

  1. Blueberries
    • For sure I am on board with this one. I like blue and purple foods for all of the great phytonutrients in them as well as just plain loving to eat blueberries.
  2. Oats
    • This one I do not agree with. I am not a big fan of grains to begin with. However, if you prepare them properly and tolerate them well then they can be healthy for you, but I do not feel that they have enough of a nutrient punch to be a superfood.
  3. Almonds
    • As with grains, I’m not a huge fan of nuts, seeds and legumes. They can be good again if prepared properly and are well tolerated, but the anti-nutrients and high amounts of polyunsaturated fats turn me away still.
  4. Eggs
    • Oh yeah! Now we are talking. It is tough to beat an egg for nutrient density and I love how the author talked about a great food to start learning to cook with. Just throw some butter in a pan and crack an egg, mix it up and you’re ready to eat. That is as simple as it gets.
  5. Cinnamon
    • I was a little surprised to see this on here because of the strong flavor of cinnamon, but if adults like it, then why not kids too. It certainly is a superfood based on the high amounts of antioxidants and immune boosting properties.
  6. Yogurt
    • This is a wonderful food to me as it provides the great nutrition of milk and adds in some great beneficial bacteria as well.
  7. Cherries
    • Another beautiful superfood. This one needs the Organic label or a local chemical free one to get the approval as it is the first of a few on the list that are in the EWG’s Dirty Dozen. Now that that is out of the way I am ready for every type of cherry in sight.
  8. Milk
    • Simply, yes. Make sure that you are getting a local raw source and the fat soluble vitamins as well as plentiful minerals will do wonders.
  9. Strawberries
    • While I do agree with strawberries as they too pack an antioxidant punch, there are a few caveats with this one. First being that if bought in a store you go with Organic, but I would still prefer local. These will not be massive berries, but much smaller and deeper red all the way through. Still be sure that no chemicals are being sprayed.
  10. Grapes
    • This was one that I’m happy I reflected upon. A grape seems very unsexy to me and is why I feel that I overlooked it as a superfood in the past. This was a mistake on my part and now understand this should certainly make the list. It really does pack in the antioxidants and phytonutrients, most notably resveratrol. Like a few above, Organic is a must here as well.

The beautiful thing about this list is these are foods that I enjoy myself for the most part and I’m guessing you regularly eat a few too. This healthy eating practice goes beyond you and I and trickles down to those we influence. Hopefully we show them how to eat well and make the world an even healthier place.

Have a Great Day!
