Your Brain as an Egg Yolk, Don’t Scramble It!

Your brain accounts for about 2-3% of your total bodyweight, but about 25% of the cholesterol in the body is actually found in the brain.

That is how critical cholesterol is to the brain and why I liken the brain to an egg yolk. Both your brain and an egg yolk contain not only a lot of cholesterol, but a lot of saturated fat as well. Hmmm. Maybe eggs really are that good for your brain!?

Not only does the brain contain ¼ of the cholesterol in the body, but most of the fatty acids in the brain are actually saturated and the brain is composed of 60% fat! Do not forget about omega-3 fats in the brain. These are critical and are also abundant in an egg yolk. I hope you are starting to the see similarities.

“Egg white omelette please”

No. No. No. No. No! In order to keep your brain healthy and functioning optimally as you age treat it like an egg yolk and don’t scramble it. What I mean by this is give the brain what it needs rather than trying to mess too much with it.

Scrambling the brain would be equivalent to:

  • Putting it on a blood sugar roller coaster
  • Not giving it enough cholesterol
  • Never pumping the body (movement and exercise)
  • Getting too little sleep

From the standpoint of the egg, feed your brain the yolks. They are very similar in makeup and yolks can have a tremendous benefit to the brain (so no more egg whites only). Study after study has started to show better memory function in those with a higher cholesterol (see study here). For those that have been fearing egg yolks and cholesterol it may be time to take another look at this miraculous food. Not only that, but it is delicious and will really give you the brain power and health you have been searching for.
